Celebrating Park and Recreation Month: Building Healthier Communities Through Play

There is a specific kind of magic in a sun-drenched July afternoon—the sound of community laughter, families cooling off at the splash pad, and the rhythmic thud of sneakers on a playground. July is Park and Recreation Month, a time to celebrate these vital local hubs that serve as the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. At Robertson Recreational Surfaces, we don’t just see these as patches of land; we see them as essential infrastructure for joy, creativity, and connection.

As a trusted partner in community-focused storytelling, our mission is to provide innovative playground and recreational surfacing solutions that support safer, durable, and engaging spaces. We believe that when the foundation of a park is built with intentionality, it transforms a simple space into a destination for inclusive play.

Why Play Matters for Community Health

Play is a fundamental driver of public health and well-being. It is through active play that children learn to take calculated risks, develop social bonds, and build physical resilience. However, for a park to truly serve its community, the ground beneath those activities must perform at a high level.

High-quality surfaces provide essential impact attenuation—the technical term for the cushioning that supports children as they explore their limits. This safety-focused performance is what gives parents peace of mind and keeps children active longer. By investing in surfaces designed for active recreational use, community leaders ensure their parks remain functional, vibrant assets that can withstand heavy traffic and the elements for years to come.

Sustainability: The "Repurposed for Play" Initiative

Robertson, as part of The Surfacing Group, is a leader in environmental stewardship. Through our "Closed-Loop Supply Chain," we take a literal hand in the circular economy, transforming waste into opportunity.

Our five-step sustainability process is built on measurable impact:
  1. Partnering: We work with distributors to keep commercial truck and OTR (off-road) tires out of landfills. Nationally, about 15 million of these tires are recycled annually; with an average truck tire weighing 120 pounds, each one we reclaim produces 12 to 14 pounds of clean, reusable rubber.

  2. Collecting: We manage an efficient, nationwide waste removal process to ensure a reliable flow of raw materials.

  3. Converting: Using specialized equipment, we clean and transform this waste into valuable, high-performance granules.

  4. Testing: Our materials undergo rigorous review in certified labs to confirm they meet strict quality and performance expectations before they ever reach your site.

  5. Repurposing for Play: The final product is a durable, sustainable surface that gives waste a second life as a community asset.
Our commitment is reflected in our 2024 impact data: we successfully diverted 74 million pounds of recycled rubber from landfills and installed 5 million square feet of poured rubber across the country.

Robertson Recreational Surfaces has been a trusted name in compliant play and recreational surfacing since 1991.
